About the client
Mysterium is an open-source, decentralized VPN provider leveraging blockchain and a global P2P node network to deliver private, censorship-resistant Internet browsing. Their Android MVP needed a secure, high-performance mobile app to support anonymous connections, fast speeds, and intuitive user experience.
Geniusee partnered with Mysterium to design, build, and test an Android VPN app that is visually polished, robust, and aligned with Mysterium’s decentralized architecture, setting new standards for mobile privacy tools.
Business context
As online privacy concerns grow, user demand for secure, anonymous browsing continues to surge. Mysterium wanted to bring its decentralized VPN infrastructure to Android users with a modern, user-friendly app.
Geniusee was tasked with transforming Mysterium’s backend-powered decentralized node network into an intuitive mobile experience, while tackling challenges such as device compatibility, strict security standards, and first-time VPN development.
First-time VPN development
The project required a deep understanding of VPN protocols, encryption, tunneling methods, and decentralized node behavior.
Complex frontend–backend collaboration
The backend was fully on the client’s side, requiring perfect synchronization between teams.
Android device fragmentation
Ensuring flawless performance across diverse devices, OS versions, and hardware types.
High-demand security requirements
VPN apps must maintain secure authentication, encrypted data transfer, and safe session handling.
Solutions we implemented
Geniusee delivered a secure, fast, and user-friendly VPN app through discovery, design, mobile engineering, and continuous QA.
Flexible Time & Materials model
The project followed a Time & Materials approach to support the research-heavy nature of VPN development and the evolving technical requirements.
This model provided full cost transparency, enabled fast pivots when priorities shifted, and allowed the team to adjust scope based on complexity. It also ensured that development hours were allocated efficiently as new insights emerged.
Kanban-based project management
To maintain clarity and momentum, we implemented a Kanban workflow that offered real-time task visibility, clear prioritization, and continuous communication between teams.
This structure supported smooth iterative releases and aligned perfectly with the project’s research-driven process, where frontend and backend tasks often ran in parallel and required rapid coordination.
Deep technical study of VPN technologies
Before engineering the solution, Geniusee conducted an in-depth study of VPN protocols, encryption methods, node routing, DNS behavior, and decentralized traffic flows.
This deep technical immersion allowed the team to build a secure, stable, high-performance VPN client from the ground up and ensured that all architectural decisions were informed by a solid understanding of the domain.
Close collaboration with the client
Because Mysterium managed the backend while Geniusee developed the mobile client, close cooperation was essential. The teams worked through daily syncs, frequent demos, and regular integration checkpoints, supported by rapid feedback loops.
This tight collaboration ensured seamless alignment between the app’s UI and Mysterium’s decentralized VPN infrastructure.
